What if your weakness isn’t the problem?

I don’t know about you, but with every passing year, I seem to set higher expectations for myself. I don’t intentionally place that pressure on myself—it just sneaks in. Before I know it, I’m exhausted from trying to change myself and measure up to the person I think I should be.

There are moments when I catch myself thinking, “If I could just fix this one thing about myself, then I’d be the person God could really use.” Maybe it’s a weakness, a personality trait, or something I feel I should have overcome by now. But more and more I’m learning that God doesn’t wait for us to become polished and perfect before He works through us.

When we try to change ourselves, we often rely on external effort. We push and strive, trying to change from the outside in. But when God changes us, in His timing, He works from the inside out, allowing His Holy Spirit to bring truth and life that results in lasting transformation.

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.”
2 Corinthians 4:7

DAY FIVE: TREASURE IN EARTHEN VESSELS

Nothing says humility quite like the picture of an earthen vessel. I imagine a common clay pot—slightly misshapen, perhaps with a few cracks, easily overlooked.

God originally formed man from dust and breathed life and Spirit into him. Adam was literally an earthen vessel formed from the dust of the earth. The beauty of this paradox is that our human form—imperfect, weak and fragile—houses the very presence of God. The treasure that resides within us is His power.

This power is described in the Greek as “dunamis.” Dunamis power is miraculous power—great force, ability, might and strength. When Jesus operated with dunamis power, it resulted in dramatic transformation. As believers, we are commissioned to carry this same power within us today.

The Message paraphrase says:

“We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us.”

By referring to the treasure as a precious message, we are reminded that the true treasure we offer the world is not our gifts or talents, but the message of Jesus and the power of God.

Regardless of how gifted we may feel, deep down we often see our humanity as weakness. We see our “cracks” as the very thing holding us back from fulfilling the call of God on our lives. We focus on our flaws, wanting to arrive at some version of perfection before we feel worthy.

But when we do this, we begin to rely on our giftedness—believing that this is what we have to offer. Yet our talents will never change lives in the same way the transformative power of God does.

This verse reminds us that God’s master plan is to use our very ordinary lives to fulfil His extraordinary purposes. When we surrender to Him, even our imperfections can become the very places where Christ reveals His glory.

This doesn’t mean we accept brokenness or stubbornly refuse to change. Rather, it’s about letting go of our desire to fix ourselves and learning to trust Jesus in the process. When we are weak, He is strong.

One of the wonders of the Christian journey is watching Christ work within us as we learn to rest in the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit. When we take matters into our own hands and strive to improve ourselves, we can miss the freedom that comes through simple obedience.

When God shapes our lives, it happens little by little—with grace.

Being changed from glory to glory is a process, and it is one that our Heavenly Father is responsible for. Our part is letting go of moulding ourselves and allowing our lives to be shaped by the Master Potter.

REFLECTION

1. Are there weaknesses in your life that feel like they are holding you back? What are they?

2. Are there areas where you have placed your hope and trust in your own abilities? The fruit of this can often look like striving, stress or anxiety—trying to hold things together or produce a certain outcome.

3. What might it look like to place yourself in God’s hands, allowing Him to shape and use you in His timing and for His purposes?

A FINAL WORD ON WEAKNESS

Focusing on the call of God on your life can become a catalyst for growth and overcoming weakness.

“Without vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18)

Vision can motivate us to draw on strength, discipline and self-control as we grow and mature. Sometimes we are called to overcome our weaknesses. Other times, our weaknesses become the very pathways through which we encounter the presence of God more deeply—and ultimately form part of our message.

PRAYER

Father, I am a vessel to be used for Your glory.
Help me to take my eyes off myself.
Let me not judge my perceived flaws or imperfections,
But instead, help me to focus on Your Holy Spirit within me.

Shape me from the inside out
and let Your glory be seen through my life.

Help me to be obedient to Your promptings
and use me as You see fit.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
